Nothing says “perfect timing” like dropping a few thousand dollars on a luxury mattress… only for it to arrive the exact morning you leave for vacation.
That’s exactly what happened when my wife, Susie, and I ordered the Puffy Royal Luxury Mattress. After 18 years of sleeping on our trusty-but-tired Sleep Number Bed, we were ready for an upgrade. We knew delivery day would cut it close to our summer trip — but we figured, what’s the worst that could happen?
Turns out, the “worst” was a 110-pound box of cloud-like comfort sitting in our driveway while we were halfway to Maryland for my son Eli’s lacrosse tournament. Instead of sleeping on our new dream bed, we would be spending the next 10 nights testing the “structural integrity” of various hotel mattresses in three different cities.
Spoiler alert: none of them held a candle to the Puffy.
Not knowing exactly how close it would be, we ordered our Puffy mattress about a week before we were scheduled to leave for our summer vacation.
The Great Delivery Day Plot Twist
The next week was just like any other week. Work, eat, sleep, poop, drive kids to practice, repeat. Except for Friday. We were leaving for vacay on Friday!
One thing that really impressed me about Puffy was their clean, well-designed website. Being a web designer myself, I appreciated the layout and flow compared to others, and it was part of the reason we chose Puffy.
What I didn’t know was that their email communication would be just as good. I’d signed up for their list days before making our final decision, and the emails I got weren’t pushy — just helpful. The moment we purchased, I could tell I’d been moved from their sales list to a customer list. No annoying sales spam after purchase.
Don’t you hate it when you buy a product from a company, then continue to get their annoying sales emails?
The week before we left, Puffy’s emails kept me updated on packaging, shipping, and even gave me a FedEx tracking number. That’s when I realized… our mattress was scheduled to arrive on THE SAME DAY we were leaving for Maryland. Sure enough, a few hours after we hit the road, FedEx delivered all 110 pounds of cloud-like comfort right to our driveway.

Enter the Neighbor: Kindness in Action
In a world where it seems like neighbors aren’t neighbors the way they were yesteryear… I guess we consider ourselves lucky that we live in a great neighborhood and we have some wonderful neighbors. We pre-arranged to have one of our neighbors come over and move the heavy box into the garage. There was a misunderstanding and that neighbor skipped town for the weekend while our mattress still lay comfortably on our driveway. Lol.
But there are plenty of neighbors where those come from… So, my wife texted another neighbor who was happy to help. There’s something to be said for “loving thy neighbor,” just like the way Jesus taught. Who knows what we would have done if we didn’t have good relationships with great neighbors. It’s possible the Puffy cloud-like mattress could have slept alone on the cold hard driveway for 10 nights all by itself.
So, lo and behold – our mattress made it into our garage for 10 restless nights alone while we were several states away staying in hotel beds for the entire week. I’m not sure who had the short end of the stick… us, or the mattress?
First Night Back: The “Sleeping on a Cloud” Test
We returned home from vacation 11 days (10 nights) later, on a Monday afternoon. We had to unpack the car… but I knew the mattress needed to be unpacked as soon as possible, too. I don’t know how they vacuum pack and cram those large mattresses into such small boxes. That picture I shared above… that’s a king-size Puffy Royal Luxury Mattress (not their smallest option) shoved into a box that it looks like 2 pillows could barely fit in!
Oh! Believe it or not, along with the king-size mattress, there were also 2 pillows inside that box!!
So, while others were unpacking the car, I started unpacking the bed. Step 1 was to disassemble the Sleep Number Bed. Luckily, those things come apart in pieces, and that was an easy chore. Below is a picture of the old Sleep Number bed, in pieces, strewn about the foyer in our house… next to the brand new Puffy mattress still in the box waiting to be released.

Step 2 was to remove the bed from the box and cut off the plastic packaging. I did so right over top of our bed frame so that the giant king-size mattress was pretty much in place when it came out of the coccoon it was shipped in. When mattresses are shipped this way, they need time to expand. I think I read somewhere that 72 hours is ideal, but that it’s okay to sleep on them after just a few hours. We had 7 or 8 hours left until bedtime – so, that was that.
After spending the previous 10 nights on various hotel beds at 3 different hotels… I could hardly wait to sleep on our brand-new Puffy mattress. I gotta say, it was heavenly. Like sleeping on a cloud.
Is It Worth It? Our Take After the First 2 Weeks
Our new Puffy mattress is definitely worth it, in my opinion. Both my wife and I have back issues that come and go, and our old Sleep Number Bed worked wonders for both of us… until it didn’t.
After 18 long years, the Sleep Number just wasn’t cutting it for us anymore. We had since added a memory foam mattress topper to the Sleep Number. But the worst part for me was that my side of the bed kept slowly losing air. So, every couple of nights (for the last several years), I had to re-adjust the air level on my side of the bed with the wireless remote. The wireless remote stopped working about 2 weeks before we ordered our Puffy. I tried everything to get it working again, and nothing worked, and there is no other way to adjust the air levels in that model of the Sleep Number bed. My side of the bed was sinking, and there was nothing I could do to inflate it anymore, and it was killing my back!
While doing my research before purchasing our Puffy mattress – I learned that even though the Royal version of their mattress had extra-soft layers on the top for cloud-like comfort, it still provided enough support for people like me with back issues.
I’ve been sleeping on my Puffy Royal Luxury Mattress for about 2 weeks now and I’m happy to report that I’ve had no back issues and I sleep amazingly well on it every single night! I’m a side sleeper and a back sleeper and the cloud-like comfort is unlike anything else I’ve slept on, no matter which position I’m in.
One of the selling points for Puffy mattresses is the risk-free 101-night sleep trial. Well, after 14 nights (a fortnite) I’m quite confident that we won’t need the rest of the trial. We’re keeping this mattress!
Two of the other selling points that sold me were the fact that Puffy offers a lifetime warranty and reason #7 (straight from their website)… their mattresses are designed and made in the USA! I looked into a few of the other online mattress retailers and not all of them have the same claim as far as being made in the USA.

One thing that I was not aware of when I purchased our Puffy mattress was the fact that they have a referral program. As part of their automated email series that I now get as a paying customer, I was informed that I can share my referral link with friends, family, on social media, or wherever! If anybody purchases a Puffy mattress after clicking on one of my links – I can earn a cash reward!
So, that’s cool. But, what’s even cooler is that not only do I get rewarded, but so does the person who clicks on one of my links. They get a hefty discount on their first Puffy mattress purchase! So, any link in this post that leads over to Puffy is indeed one of my referral links. If you click on one and buy a brand-new Puffy mattress – you’ll get a nice fat discount and I’ll get a small referral reward. Win-win!
Now if only Puffy could invent a way to deliver a mattress to whatever hotel I’m stuck in on our next trip… we’d really be in business!
